Make no bones about it!
A message from a principal
Dear Book Fair Chairperson,
ets and the Scholastic Book Fair — what a powerful combination! Both are things kids love. That synergy is the inspiration behind the featured theme of the spring
Scholastic Book Fair, Paws for Books: Come. Stay. Read a Great Tale! I am paws-itive that this theme will help encourage and increase independent reading among your students.
As both a principal and Book Fair chairperson, I am always looking for ways to incorporate the Book Fair into real-life learning opportunities. This Ideas Guidebook has many great ideas, from building props to reading with furry friends.
All of the thematic décor and props in this guide have “how-
to” directions located in your Chairperson’s Toolkit under the tab Fair Files. Creating and constructing Fair decorations ties in purr-fectly with Makerspace and STEM activities. Involving stu- dents, staff, and volunteers in preparing for the Book Fair provides for “reading/thinking outside of the box” opportunities.
Everyone loves to talk about and share pictures of their pets, so plan a pet-centric Grandparent or Family Event. Instead of worrying about allergies with real pets, feature a Virtual Pet Show. Collect photos of family pets, create a slide show of them, and play it during your event. Keep up the excitement and award Book Fair door prizes purchased with your Scholastic DollarsTM. Then top off your event with a Chili Dog Bar!
We know engaging reading activities build stronger readers. Therapy dogs are a wonderful way to motivate reluctant readers
to practice. In fact, when a therapy dog visits our school, it’s the highlight of the day! Check with your local organizations about this service that encourages reading fluency, and include a pet visit during your Book Fair week.
This spring I’ll be so excited when the Scholastic Book Fairs® Planning Kit box arrives, thinking about all of the possibilities. So, remember to share your Book Fair ideas in the ways described
in the online Idea Share and on social media. Make no bones about it — the synergy of students choosing great books and an engaging theme always result in student learning. It’s the purr-fect combination!
Looking forward to sharing ideas with other Book Fair enthusiasts!
