WORKSHOPS
Cultivating a Thriving Literacy Culture in Schools
Dr. Alice Lee
Why is a culture of literacy important? What are some successful practices? How can I promote a culture of literacy in my school? In this interactive session, we will share practices and insights on developing and sustaining a culture of literacy from the administrative, teacher, and community point of view. During one section of the workshop, speakers will lead the participants in a “Grand Conversation.” A highly engaging, riveting story will be read together and participants, in a circle, will engage in a dialogue about the text, facilitated by the speakers but led and carried by the participants. This is an e ective practice to build classroom community around a challenging, multiple perspective, and interesting text.
Best suited for Pre-K to grade 5.
Developing Identity and Empathy Through Independent Reading
Chad Everett
During this session, participants will step inside Chad Everett’s classroom as he models how independent reading can be harnessed as an opportunity to help students foster positive self- identities and develop empathy and understanding for others. Participants will explore how to move beyond simply providing access to diverse texts to critically examining how to incorporate diverse texts within their instruction.
Best suited for librarians, English teachers, and administrators. Grades 4-12.
Inspiring Kids in Turbulent Times: Empowering Children Through Stories
