Power to the (Little) People: Literacy for Liberation

From the moment Columbus stepped foot in the Americas, literacy has been used to empower some and subjugate others. How can teachers harness the power of literacy? How can they leverage it to empower all students to become actively literate citizens — people who vote, seek justice, and  nd pleasure in becoming literate?
Best suited for teachers. Grades K-5.
Project LIT Community: Empowering Readers and Leaders
Dr. Jarred Amato
This interactive session will walk attendees through the Project LIT Community journey, including a step-by-step guide to launching their own book club. Participants will also dig into the major challenges facing today’s reader, including Ten Tips for Creating a Positive Reading Culture in our schools and classrooms. We will address how to: motivate and engage all readers; design and structure an e ective literacy block; build an inclusive classroom library; and incorporate social justice and social emotional learning in an English classroom. Finally, we will encourage attendees to ask, “What if...?” as they develop short- and long-term solutions that will e ectively engage all students.
Best suited for librarians, English teachers, and administrators. Grades 4-12.
Revving Up Read-Alouds

Reading aloud improves students’ reading comprehension and vocabulary, builds background knowledge, and increases students’ reading interest and motivation. In this workshop, attendees will investigate the value and implementation of read-alouds across the school day, and participate in several model lessons and activities that you can implement with your students. The session will also include resources and book recommendations for students from kindergarten through high school.
Best suited for K-8.
School Library Journal Presents ... Identifying and Evaluating Harmful Stereotypes
& Tropes in Children’s Literature
Kiera Parrott and Mahnaz Dar
Based on School Library Journal’s day-long workshops and multi-week online courses on diversity and cultural competency for librarians, this session will o er a deep-dive into problematic issues in text and art that librarians, book selectors, and anyone engaging in readers’ advisory or book promotion should be aware of and able to identify. Attendees will then put this knowledge to use through a hands-on evaluation activity using popular picture books.
Best suited for educators and librarians serving students. Grades K-6.
