Studying Own Voices Authors: Why It Matters

Join us as we study the stories of “own” voice authors and what one third-grade class learned about culture, race, ability, power, and more through the stories. Participants will be taken through the process used to explore the stories of “own” voice authors. Workshop curriculum will include authors, books, teaching strategies, and student work.
Best suited for classroom teachers, literacy coaches, reading teachers, and librarians. Grades K-5.

In this session, participants will talk about ways to use books as an antidote to the trauma- lled information overload that has in ltrated our lives. We’ll explore some of the latest titles to help readers feel safe, develop skills for navigating con ict, and employ empathy in the face of increasingly divisive narratives in the news.
