STEP 5:
TRAINING VOLUNTEERS
Host a volunteer meet-and-greet to familiarize volunteers with the Book Fair. Share their job descriptions with them, outlining their responsibilities and your expectations. The more they know, the better equipped they will be to assist your shoppers.
Generate instant team spirit by creating a special group name and uniform to unify your volunteers. Uniforms can be as simple as T-shirts, aprons, hats, lanyards, or stickers. Some team name options include:
• FBI(FathersBeingInvolved)
• BookFairLadies’Club
• WatchD.O.G.S.(DadsofGreatStudents) • BFFF(BookFairFansForever)
• VIPTeam(VeryInvolvedParent)
Include volunteers as part of the Book Fair Preview. Point out how cases are grouped by age level, reading level, and similar genres. Then, explain how the header panels and shelf-strips located on elementary school Fairs indicate the general category and reading level for books found on each case.
Familiarize volunteers with the different categories of books that are displayed on tables.
Point out the locations of posters and school supplies, cashier table, and Classroom Wish List display.
Show volunteers where prices are found on most items.
Equip volunteers who work the Fair during operating hours with booklist yers. The book categories, advertised titles, and short annotations will come in handy when assisting shoppers.
Explain the proper procedure of what to do when they encounter an out-of-stock title.
Training Tips & Tools: The Volunteer Tool provides volunteers with training materials based on the role(s) they selected so they’ll show up prepared and ready to help!
