Independent Reading Bandwagon
by Dr. Kimberly N. Parker
I’ve always loved reading. I grew up black
and poor on a farm in Kentucky where,
raised by my grandparents who struggled
miraculously, for books. Plus, I read
whatever I wanted to: books about the
Vietnam War, series, romance
—
nothing
was out of bounds. I have always known
what it means to have a positive relationship with reading,
and I’ve always had family members that have carved out
(e.g. my grandfather and uncles, who read farm manuals,
horse books, and other texts related to their farm work).
When I began teaching, then it made perfect sense that
my students deserved such a life as well.
